9/1/00 Florida 49  Marshall 14

I knew Steve Spurrier had something up his sleeve.  Selecting Rex Grossman as his starter was not a bad choice after all.  Passing for 375 yards, completing 20 of 30 and romping Marshall 49-14.  With an opening day opponent of this "quality", Florida managed to silence their trash talk and make a statement.  The Gators are good and they showed it today.

Alex Brown and Andra Davis had a pair of sacks.  They pressured the "best QB in the Country from Marshall" (what is Pruett thinking), and the secondary played very well.

Last couple of years, our openers were rather lackluster, and while we did beat Ball State and Western Michigan, it was painful to watch those Gators struggle.  this year, the Gators look different.  They did not commit many penalties and they were strong.

Marshall talked too much going into this game. We are a proud team, and the Gators' defense came out inspired. They put a lot of pressure on Marshall QB Byron Leftwich. Rex Grossman looked good and the offense made big plays. Jabar Gaffney and Reche Caldwell were open at will and once the Gators got up 21-0, it was clear that it was emotionally all over for Marshall. Next time they should stick to the game and not trash talking.  I am sure the Swamp is a lot louder and a tougher place to play than Marshall realized going into the game.

I also watched the Tennessee game, and they looked pathetic.  Next week should be another tune up on the road to our first big test vs. the Vols.
