9/16/00 Gators 27 Toothlessee 23
| Was it luck? Was it good
defense? Was it simply like Coach Spurrier says "God smiles on
the Gators"?
I am just glad we won and beat a team that outplayed us (but we out played them in 1998 in that OT loss in Knoxville so this makes it even). Rocky Top dominated the game except in one category. The Score. Jesse Palmer threw a controversial TD with 20 seconds left taking us to 3-0 and a victory over the Porky Fulmer and the Vols. I bet all those people in Neyland Stadium were pissed off and that the referee had to be careful where he went. No camera angle was able to show if indeed it was a bad call, but the call was made emphatically and we win. 27-23!! Hillbilly boys, go home and cry, you are out of the SEC race. So, this makes it 12 of 15 against Rocky Top and the inside track on the SEC East. While Palmer played a good game, the Gator WR crew must improve. In the first half alone, they dropped 8 balls and they were not Palmer's fault. One led to an INT. Let's not forget Jeff Chandler, who kept us in the game with his field goals. Remember my outlook, the kicking game was key. For a minute there, I thought Spurrier would replace Palmer (about 4 minutes left in the half). He stuck with him and Palmer can now breath a little easier with this win against the Vols. This victory was so important to us and even for players who are long gone. Former Gator Jevon Kearse, now with the Tennessee Titans, called many of his former teammates this week, explaining the importance of a win. Kearse wants no part of living in Tennessee after a Gator loss. During the game, I kept thinking how sweet it was during the 94-96 timeframe winning all those games by a wide margin. However, winning by a close margin is even better, in a thriller on the road is way way better.. With Michigan's loss, the Gators are now truly National Championship contenders. Win out all games and we will be in the Orange bowl, with home field advantage and I will be there!!
