9/10/00 Florida 55  Middle Tenn. State

Not bad, but still room for improvement.  Jesse Palmer did not demonstrate that he is the starting QB.  He only put 24 points on the board, and after watching an impressive Rex Grossman, there will be most likely a QB controversy this week in Gainesville.  In what turned out to be a woodshed whooping the Gators beat that other team in Tennessee 55-0 (just like predicted).

A couple of stars include RB Earnest Graham and Punt Returner/CB Lito Sheppard.  In addition, Todd Johnson picked up a fumble late in the game and took it the length of the field for a TD.

In this game, the Middle Tenn. showed some signs of moving the ball, but most drives would stall by mid-field.

BOTTOM LINE:
The Gators can now look at the Volunteers right in the cross-hairs.  This game shows some improvement.  I would still give Palmer the start.  In preparation for the game, Grossman should get equal time in practice.  The defense was impressive, and they showed that unless you run up field, the runner will not have a chance.  Tennessee was idle.  The crowd in Neyland will be ugly, but I believe the Gators are far better.  Stay tuned for my preview next week.

The Gators stay 71-0 in the Spurrier era against unranked teams in The Swamp.
