9/2/99 Florida 40 Ball State 19
Were you impressed? I was not and people in the crowd were booing long and hard after the Palmer proved that his job is in jeopardy. While the Gators broke the losing streak from last year, this game will not make the highlight reel. If anything, the bright spot was the first drive of the game as the Gators opened with a surprise on side kick and utilized the tight ends in what looked like would be a wood-shed whooping. Far from that. Ball State stuck to their game plan and the Gators made mistakes (as usual). At one point, it became so ugly that Spurrier decided to punt on 3rd and long, Ball State scored on a long drive and people (including myself) started to panic. Boos from the crowd were rampant, and with a lackluster showing like this one, they deserve the boos. We did not even have a chance to see Brock Berlin as time ran out. All in all, this was a performance that will be easily forgotten, if improvements are made. That is a big IF. With the mistakes we made and the 12 balls (yes I counted) that were overthrown, dropped, or simply not played by Palmer and this crew of receivers we will not beat Georgia (I am confident about beating Tennessee). Spurrier will improve this team and has another shot next week. This game proves one thing. We must continue to play patsies in game openers as the SEC schedule lurks in two weeks. Finally, our kicker stunk. Let's hope next week brings a much improved Palmer and that he can carry his load as he is supposed to. If not, bring on Berlin!!
