9/5 Florida 49  The Citadel 10

As usual, the Gators enter the 1998 season with win an impressive win over a not so impressive opponent.  Jesse Palmer displayed some good and bad while Terry Jackson demonstrated that last year was a freak accident.   The Gators, lead by Palmer, beat the lowly Bulldogs by a score of 49-10 in a game where Palmer threw for 301 yards and 4 touchdowns while Jackson ran for 127 yards.

A couple of freshman Robert Gillespie and Earnst Graham showed great promise as they got some time on the field in this blowout.  Palmer did not appear to make any major mistakes, but will continue to fight for the starting spot as next week Doug Johnson appears to be ready for action.  What Spurrier will decide appears to be a game time decision according to him during the post-game show.

On the defensive side, the Gators' strength, they allowed 137 yards on the ground from this mediocre team.  Bob Stoops said during a post-game interview "we will have to improve" and "maybe we got hit by early season butterflies".  Call it whatever you want to call it, the Gators must improve on defense and not allow the long runs I saw during the game on Saturday.

The only advantage the Bulldogs had by the end of the game was possessions time.  I credit this to their running game and Florida's passing style.   Florida also emptied the benches and gave time to a couple of the other QBs.   They drove down field and scored.

BOTTOM LINE
This is a learning experience.  The Gators use these two first games as "pre-SEC season" warm-ups.  I give credit to Tennessee for playing a tough Syracuse and fsu for playing Texas A&M.  I wish we did this too, but I suppose we can use the early practice against the patsies. Terry Jackson is 100% and ready to carry the load.  I suggest Spurrier use him more and play the run more often.  I know that goes against his philosophy, but it will get the wins.
