11/8 Florida 20 Vanderbilt 7
| In an ugly win, the
Gators continue their SEC/Swamp winning streak and beat
the Commodores from Vanderbilt who came into the game
with a top ranked ranked, highly regarded defense. The
Gators held the Vandy offense and only allowed one long
drive to win by the score of 20-7 and give Steve Spurrier
his 100th win. Spurrier reached the century win mark in just 11 seasons plus nine games as a collegiate coach, becoming the sixth-fastest coach to reach the century mark, matching one of greatest coaches in the history of college football - Penn State's Joe Paterno. However, it was bittersweet as Florida "won ugly" according to Spurrier. Although the win is great, it was expensive. Many Gators were injured and Noah Brindise did not impress anyone, but unlike Johnson he did NOT make the big mistake. He started the game and coach Spurrier did not play QB roulette, but I am sure the Coach is not happy with the QB position. On the other side, the defense was relentless. Allowing only 60 passing yards and yards and had the Vandy QB scrambling all day. Also, Fred Weary broke the interception record by picking off the Commodores today and recording his 15th career int. Where do the Gators go from here? Short term....They need to improve in the QB and wide receiver timing areas. It seems that Brindise is off on many of the throws and the receivers are either short or not there at all. On a more long term basis....any title is out of the questions short of a miracle (two UGA lost and one UT loss), so the Gators need to end the season with two strong victories against South Carolina and of course spoiling fsu's run for the National Championship. That would leave us with the State Championship which is not too bad since it helps in the recruiting wars. I know the Gators will be ready for fsu, but the real questions is: will the QB position be stable enough to sustain the pass rush and great defense fsu has?? well, its yet to be decided, but in The Swamp we have a good shot at the noles. I am glad this ugly game (just like the Vandy game last year) is over and the Gators can now focus on a weak South Carolina team. I expect we will blow them out, but check out me preview this coming week. |
