11/1 Florida 17 Georgia 37
| In a major
disappointment, the Gators get clobbered by a more
prepared and better equipped Georgia team. As much as
this one hurts, you have to give credit to these Dawgs
and the great job coach Jim Donnan has done with this
1997 Bulldog team. We beat ourselves against a mediocre
LSU team, but UGA is better than Florida. From the opening kick-off the Dawgs had the upper hand by returning the ball 50+ yards and getting great field position. This set the tempo for the rest of the game. Bobo and the UGA offense converted every critical third down and made the Gators and their defense look average. In his weekly wrap-up of the game, The Steve Spurrier Show, coach Spurrier confirmed what I believed is the problem with the Gators - The QB position and the passing game. Not to take away from thew Dawgs, we should have run the ball more. Fred Taylor was effective when used , we just did not give the ball to him 30+ times. Spurrier took credit for calling so many long pass plays that are low percentage. "We must focus more on the ground game" said Spurrier in his TV program. Its too bad that when things go wrong, Spurrier does not change his gameplan and adjust the offense. This is a common thread with the Nebraska, fsu, LSU and UGA losses. Steve Spurrier needs to realize that he can't throw against everyone with anybody. Yanking Johnson only adds fuel to the fire and makes his confidence go down the drain. I hope he realizes that Fred Taylor is nothing to be ashamed of and turns him lose against fsu. Now, the SEC east is out of reach with a record of 4-2, Tennessee controls their destiny with a weak schedule down the stretch. For us to make it to Atlanta, Georgia would have to loose twice and UT would have to loose once. That is just NOT going to happen. Now the Gators must focus on the pride of the National Champions and win the rest of the games with a chance at an alliance bowl like the Sugar or Fiesta against a highly ranked team. This means spoiling the fsu run for the National Championship and beating them in The Swamp. We must also not embarrass ourselves and win against Vandy and USC. I predict we end up playing in one of the Bowls in the state of Florida (this really SUCKS), but we will represent the SEC well and finish in the Top 10. I hope we get to play Notre Dame and kick their ass!! This loss against Georgia hurts, but seven in a row was a nice run against these Dawgs. Now the focus is Vanderbilt and their highly ranked defense. I would suggest to coach Spurrier that he start thinking about leaving Johnson in there and help him with the running game. This QB roulette just does not work with these guys (they are too immature and rookie). Start employing a 2-set back formation with Bo Carrol and Fred Taylor. We just can't pass and make the big play downfield like we did when we had Heisman winner Danny Wuerffel. |
