| Florida looked
impressive finishing off the game with three scores in
the 4th quarter to lead the #1 Gators to a romp of the
Hogs 56-7. Bo Carrol started the hog killing by returning
the opening kick-off 94 yards and score a TD. He is FAST
and elusive and will grow into a star in the Gator
offense. The defense also shined by holding Arkansas to -56 (yes negative 56) yards rushing (a Florida record) and did not allow Arkansas to score until late in the game. It was the worst defeat for the Arkansas Hogs since 1943 when Tulsa beat them 61-0. However, going into the third quarter I felt Steve Spurrier should have taken Doug Johnson and more starters out of the game. This caused Johnson and others to get hurt (when they should have been resting on the bench) with the mid-season stretch coming up of LSU-AU-UGA this is a big problem as Johnson, Yarborough, and Piller all got hurt and will be out for some time. Fred Taylor tied Emmit Smith as the only Gators to rush for 100+ yards in each of their first 5 games as Taylor rushed for 103 yards vs. the Razorbacks. On the defensive side, Fred Weary picked his 14th ball from an opposing QB which ties him for a school record he will no doubt break this year. On the bad side, the Gators did have some ugly penalties and were lucky in recovering two fumbles that against better teams could go the other way. The offense can't rely on the defense for every game and Spurrier knows this. The next three games will be the test of the 1997 as we go on the road to face LSU, Auburn and Georgia (at Jax). |
