9/6 Florida 82 Central Michigan 6
| In a record breaking
performance, the Gators scored big as Doug Johnson tied a
record. He threw for 7 TDs in one half and broke QB Terry
Dean's record set in 1994 (it also tied an NCAA record).
They also broke the margin of victory (69 points) record
set in 1988 against Montana St.(69-0) with a 82-6 win
over Central Michigan. They also broke the total points
record (77) set by the '83 Gators against West Texas St. The one negative from the game were the missed PATs which in tight games will not be acceptable. Lets hope Spurrier fixes this issue. The Gators got off to a quick start when Doug Johnson with less than a minute into the game threw his first touchdown. Just a few moments after that Florida blocked a punt and scored another touchdown. This set the tone and the theme for the game..... another Gator early season victory against a non-SEC team. However, sometimes I wish we would play more capable opponents in non-conference games i.e. Notre Dame, a Big 10 team, or someone out of the PAC-10 like the Vols did today (ACC and Big East are not worthy conferences). After half-time, the entire offensive starting lineup was benched in place of the 2nd and 3rd strings which gives Coach Spurrier a chance to see more talent play and eliminates the risk of injury (it also "theoretically" prevents running up the score). But regardless of who they played, the Gators did look impressive and this boosts our confidence and gets us ready for our next game against those hated Vols in what has become the biggest game in the SEC every year. Check out my Tennessee game outlook and prediction. In the second half, the Gators started running the ball more and were a little more conservative(again, trying to avoid scoring 100 points), but Central Michigan was just too mediocre of a team to sustain the Gator 2nd string offense and they scored 26 more points in the second for a final score of 82-6 and a victory over the Central Michigan Chippewas. To put this in perspective the Chips had total attendance in their stadium last year of 93,000 (Gators average 85,000 per home game), but who would argue with the Chippewas....their payday was $349,039. Reminds me of the heavyweight boxing division when anyone would fight for a big payday with Mike Tyson. Bottom line: We should have never played this game and should be playing someone like Kansas St., Washington, or Northwestern. That would show how good the Gators are in non-SEC games since I believe they can beat anybody in the country and the SEC is the strongest conference in the nation. Great exhibition, and practice situations but boring game. |
